JEFF KINGSLEY JOINS COMPASS RACING FOR REMAINING IMSA WEATHERTECH SPRINT CUP EVENTS
Current Porsche GT3 Cup Championship leader to sub for Corey Fergus and co-drive with Paul Holton
VISTA, CA — Compass Racing has signed Jeff Kingsley to co-drive the team’s No. 76 Richard Mille McLaren 720S GT3 with McLaren Factory Driver Paul Holton for the two remaining rounds of IMSA’s WeatherTech Sprint Cup, subbing for Corey Fergus, whose wife is expecting their first child in the coming weeks.
“When we started the season, the Sprint Cup would have been finished by October and there wouldn’t have been a conflict,” noted Fergus. “With the schedule as it now stands, I’d likely end up missing the birth of my daughter, which I’m loathe to do. I’m thankful to the team for finding a worthy replacement in Jeff.”
Indeed, Toronto-based Kingsley has been impressive in IMSA’s Porsche GT3 Cup championship this season, taking six wins and currently leading the points standings. The 22-year-old, who began his career in karting, has 16 championships, 59 race wins and 34 pole positions to his name.
“I’m really excited to co-drive the Compass GTD McLaren with Paul,” enthused Kingsley. “Corey had two pole positions this year. I know I’ve got big shoes to fill and am thrilled for the opportunity to race at the top level of sportscar racing in America. McLaren is a great brand, Compass is a proven championship winner and the Sprint Cup is an incredibly competitive series.”
The next round, at Charlotte Motor Speedway, is new to the series and should prove to an exciting event on October 9th and 10th. Run on the combined oval and infield road course, the 100-minute contest will feature GTLM and GTD cars racing into the night, with NASCAR’s Xfinity and Cup series also competing over the weekend.
The final event on the Sprint Cup calendar is October 31st to November 2nd at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The two-hour-and-forty-minute race will include all four IMSA classes on the tight and twisty Northern California track.
“Whilst we’re going to miss Corey, the team is fully behind his decision to sit out the last two races,” noted Team Owner Jill Beck. “At the same time, we are so pleased to welcome Jeff as Paul’s co-driver. We’ve talked with him a lot over the past few years and are glad that he’s going to be part of the Compass Racing family."
The Charlotte and Laguna Seca races will be televised on NBCSN and NBC Track Pass.
